Global Warming Effects on Extreme Weather – Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming – 2008-07-10 – In the aftermath of severe storms across America and throughout the world, and with Bertha strengthening to the first hurricane of the season, extreme weather is on the minds of people around the globe. And while storms, floods and droughts have always occurred, science points to our changing climate as having a real effect on the severity and frequency of extreme weather events. Extreme precipitation events have increased over North America over the past 50 years. For the past decade, the West and Southwest regions have experienced drought conditions which are impacting agriculture, and contributing to the wildfire epidemic in the Western United States. On Thursday, Chairman Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.) and the Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming will hold a hearing examining the links between global warming, extreme weather events, and how these events affect the world now and will in the future. WITNESS LIST: Jimmy O. Adegoke, Ph.D, Associate Professor, University of Missouri – Kansas City; Heather Cooley, Senior Research Associate, Pacific Institute; Dr. Jay S. Golden, Director, National Center of Excellence, SMART Innovations for Urban Climate and Energy, Global Institute of Sustainability, Arizona State University; Angela Licata, Deputy Commissioner, New York City Bureau of Environmental Planning and Analysis; Dan Keppen

I live on Juno St. in Forest Hills, NY in the borough of Queens. This video was taken shortly after a MACROBURST swept through my neighborhood on 9/16/2010. I copy & pasted information below from the National Weather Service website explains in detail what happened in NYC (specifically Brooklyn & Queens) this day. My video focuses on the immediate aftermath of the macroburst in Forest Hills. Turns out a macroburst can be just as bad or worse than a tornado. I didn’t even know what a macroburst was until this morning. The video focuses on Juno St. (between 68th & 69th Ave), PS 144 (which is right around the block from my home on 69th Ave. between Juno & Kessel St.), & the large tree at the end of the video is on the corner of 69th Ave & Loubet St. This tree is actually in front of my Mother’s house (the house I grew up in) & the lady’s car it crushed is my Aunt’s. The song at the end is “Riders on the Storm” by The Doors (from a cd I own titled: LA Woman) PUBLIC INFORMATION STATEMENT…CORRECTED NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE NEW YORK NY 1022 PM EDT FRI SEP 17 2010 …TWO TORNADOES AND A MACROBURST CONFIRMED ON SEPTEMBER 16 2010… ..CORRECTED TO CHANGE MICROBURST TO MACROBURST BECAUSE MAXIMUM PATH WIDTH WAS GREATER THAN 2 1/2 MILES. …TORNADO CONFIRMED NEAR PARK SLOPE IN KINGS COUNTY (BROOKLYN) NY… LOCATION…PARK SLOPE IN KINGS COUNTY (BROOKLYN) NY DATE…SEPTEMBER 16 2010 ESTIMATED TIME…5:33 PM EDT MAXIMUM EF-SCALE RATING…EF0 ESTIMATED MAXIMUM WIND
