Keep New Brunswick chickens and jobs in New Brunswick! Today, more than 270000 chickens a week leave New Brunswick, and are trucked 500 km to Québec by conglomerate Groupe Westco in defiance of longstanding principles of supply management. More than 165 New Brunswick jobs have been lost as a result. Supply management regulations exist in Canada to ensure consumers to receive a safe, quality product at a reasonable cost, and to protect family farms and local processors. The system is on the verge of collapse in New Brunswick, threatening local jobs and the safety and stability of our food supply. The New Brunswick government, who is responsible to uphold these regulations, has turned a blind eye to this crisis, saying it is just a dispute between two private sector companies. Canadian industry experts are watching New Brunswick with well-justified concern. Every other province uses the processes made available to them to protect the principles of supply management. New Brunswick stands alone in abandoning its supply management regulatory role. The provincial government must live up to its responsibility to take action on this issue and return our jobs and chickens to our province. Learn more at

The Nova Scotia government in kahoots with NS Power and the Utility Review Board have secured a bleak renewable energy future for Nova Scotians. Apparently incentives for renewable producers are the worst in the country. Policy change is required and a mature focus on energy to bring the province back inline with global trends. The Speaker is Neal Livingston reacting to a presentation by German renewable energy expert Dr. Christine Woerlen. See CRESTHalifax Youtube channel for more information on the series. Neal Livingston has a distinguished career as an environmental activist. He is the chair of the Margaree Environmental Association which has fought successfully to preserve wilderness areas on Cape Breton. He is the former chair of both the National Conservation Committee and Nova Scotia Conservation Committee of the Sierra Club of Canada. This included the famous 1993-5 battle to re-protect the Jim Campbell’s Barren, a political scandal Livingston assisted in bringing to national front page media attention. From his home province he has received a Nova Scotia Energy Award (1989) and the first Creative Arts/Cultural Nova Scotia Environmental Award (1993). Neal Livingston’s personal experiences in building a small hydro operation for his own use led him to produce two films Water Power (1981) and A Portrait of Small Hydro (1983). They examine the history and technology behind such small-scale operations. Since 1984 he owns Black River Hydro Ltd., a 220 kilowatt hydro
